The quick choice
Consider Dunks for a floating, slow-release ring in label-approved containerized standing water. Consider Bits if you prefer granules, or also need the separate labeled use for fungus gnat larvae in plant growing media. These are our practical recommendations based on the Dunks and Bits product information and labels, not a hands-on comparison test.
First, remove standing water where you can. You may not need a product for a container you can empty and keep from collecting water. Eliminating breeding water is part of the EPA's mosquito-control advice. Start with our weekly yard check or use the free local-help finder.

What actually differs?
| Consideration | Dunks · 2-pack | Bits · 30 oz |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Floating rings; gradual Bti release | Granules; Bti released at application |
| Timing | 30 days or longer under typical environmental conditions | Retreat at 7 or 14 days, depending on organic matter and larval abundance |
| A separate plant use? | Choose here for mosquito larvae | Separate label directions for fungus gnat larvae in plant growing media |
The timing above comes from the Dunks label and Bits label. Results depend on environmental conditions and correct use. Follow the label on the product you buy; the linked specimen may differ. Do not transfer application amounts or directions between products or uses.
What neither product replaces
Bti targets larvae. Treating a breeding site is different from protecting yourself against adult mosquitoes already flying nearby. Keep using appropriate bite protection; the EPA recommends registered repellents, screens and protective clothing. Our gear guide covers those options.
Neither pack is automatically the better value. We have not calculated a cost per treatment, and pack size alone does not answer that question. Compare the current retail price with the directions for your actual treatment site before choosing.
Before you apply either
Check that your water site is allowed by the purchased product's label. Both specimen labels prohibit direct application to finished, treated drinking water intended for human consumption. They also carry handling precautions, including avoiding dust and eye contact and washing after handling. Read all precautions on your package. Sources: Dunks label, Bits label.
For New York users, the Bits specimen label limits use to containerized water with no outflow to the natural environment. Bits also has separate fungus-gnat directions; mosquito-water directions are not a houseplant treatment recipe.
Check for local help first
The MSQTO finder is free to use, with no account or email signup required. Find a public mosquito-control program and confirm its service area, eligibility and any fee directly with the agency. A listing does not promise free treatment.
